Regina King Receives Historic Golden Globe Awards Nomination

Regina King was among three women nominated in the best director category for the first time in Golden Globe Awards history. The One Night in Miami director joined Promising Young Woman‘s Emerald Fennell and Nomadland director Chloé Zhao in the category, when the nominations were announced Wednesday morning.

Among the acting nominees for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Chadwick Boseman received a best actor in a motion picture – drama nod, for his role as musician Levee Green in the Netflix drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Viola Davis picked up a nomination for best actress in a motion picture – drama, for her starring role in the film as blues icon Ma Rainey.

Newcomer Andra Day was also nominated in the best actress category for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Netflix and Amazon picked up the most nominations among the studios, giving the two streaming giants a big boost over  traditional television networks and movie studios.

Other notable nominations for actors in film and television this past year included Judas and the Black Messiah’s Daniel Kaluuya, who received a nomination for best actor in a supporting role in any motion picture for his performance as Black Panther leader Fred Hampton; and John Boyega was nominated for his role as Leroy Logan, a real-life London police officer, in Steve McQueen’s anthology series Small Axe.

The Golden Globe Awards will air live on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to co-host the virtual event.
