Janelle Monáe Torches the South in ‘Antebellum’ Trailer (Video)

The trailer for Antebellum, featuring Janelle Monáe in her first lead movie role, dropped Thursday and it’s fiery — literally.

From the producers behind Jordan Peele’s hit films Get Out and Us, the horror thriller depicts Monáe’s character being mysteriously abducted and transported to a seemingly alternate reality as a slave.

The Antebellum trailer delves deeper into Monáe’s character arc as she is targeted in modern times during a night out with friends and whisked away to a cotton field during the slavery era in the South. It shows Monáe and other slaves toiling in a cotton field, but her character later rises up and starts a fire.

The movie asks “What if fate chose you to save us from our past?”

Plot details are being kept under wraps, with the studio description simply saying Monáe’s lead character “Veronica Henley is a successful writer who finds herself trapped in a nightmarish retread of the country’s original sin.”

A teaser for the Lionsgate release hit the web in November. The movie also stars Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles, and Jena Malone.

Antebellum was written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. It is Monáe’s latest film project, after previously appearing in Harriet, Hidden Figures and Moonlight.

The movie hits theaters on April 24.  Watch the trailer above.
