Oscars 2020: ‘Harriet’ Star Cynthia Erivo Lands Two Nominations

Cynthia Erivo picked up two nominations Monday morning, when the nominees were announced for the 2020 Academy Awards.

The British actress and singer, who played abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the Kasi Lemmons-directed drama Harriet, was nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song for co-writing and performing the film’s closing track, “Stand Up.”

In the lead actress category, Erivo will compete with Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story); Saoirse Ronan (Little Women); Charlize Theron (Bombshell); and Renée Zellweger (Judy).

Among the male nominees, Antonio Banderas was nominated in the Best Actor category for his performance in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory.

Banderas will compete against Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood); Adam Driver (Marriage Story); Joaquin Phoenix (Joker); and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).

Awards season favorites Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Lopez were snubbed with Just Mercy; Dolemite Is My Name; and Hustlers shut out of the four acting categories.

In the Best Director category, Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) Sam Mendes (1917) Todd Phillips (Joker) Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) picked up nods. Among all the nominees, Joker led with 11 nods.

John Cho and Issa Rae announced the nominations. The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and will air live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
