Tisha Campbell is speaking out about the trauma of being sexually abused as a child.
The singer and actress bravely recounts the details of what happened on the season 2 premiere of TV One’s auto-biographical series Uncensored.
Campbell said she was three years old when a male babysitter raped her.
“It was a babysitter, somebody very close to us,” she explained. “He was watching me and my brothers. I remember us watching TV and I was a yeller. I can’t remember which brother had a butter knife, but to me it was a knife, and I said, ‘Put that knife down!’ And the babysitter said, ‘I told you if you yell one more time, you’re going to get it.’ So I thought I was getting a spanking.”
The babysitter then told her to “get in the room.”
“He left the room for a second and I was so scared I was shaking. And I remember him bringing back Crisco,” she said.
Campbell then went into graphic detail about what happened.
“I remember my spirit escaping my body and hovering over and watching what was happening, and I felt myself hurl myself into a corner and ball up and I think I blacked out,” she explained.
“I remember feeling really numb, not physically but numb spiritually,” she added.
The next morning, Campbell said she told her parents.
“I was still kind of limping and I remember my dad saying, ‘What’s wrong with you? Why are you limping like that?’ And I said [the babysitter’s name], and I said ‘he put his thing inside me.’ And I knew that ‘he’ll handle it. My dad will handle it.'”
Campbell’s mom says in the clip, she didn’t know how to respond.
The actress has talked about being abused before, and has encouraged other survivors to speak out. You can hear more of her story this weekend when her full interview airs.
Uncensored returns to TV One on Sunday, October 6 at 9 p.m. ET/8C.
