Jason Mitchell’s character on The Chi will meet an untimely death when the series returns for its third season.
A Showtime executive made the revelation Friday at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills, according to The Wrap.
“There is a lot of great life in ‘The Chi’ and there’s also death in ‘The Chi’ and that’s how we’ll be dealing with it,” Showtime Networks co-president of entertainment Gary Levine told reporters.
A journalist then asked for Levine to elaborate about the fate of Mitchell’s character, Brandon Johnson.
“So he’ll be killed off?” — the reporter asked. Levine nodded yes in response.
News that Mitchell had been fired from the series surfaced on May 20, amid multiple allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behavior,
Tiffany Boone, who played his on-screen girlfriend on The Chi, was said to be one of “several actresses on the series who had issues with Mitchell,” an insider told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.
Boone reportedly left the Lena Waithe-created series after telling producers she could no longer work with Mitchell. The actor remained on the show following Boone’s departure. But he was later dropped when other actresses reportedly said they had problems working with him.
