BET is set to honor the late Nipsey Hussle at its upcoming awards show.
The network will issue Hussle a posthumous Humanitarian Award, and there will be a tribute performance featuring DJ Khaled, YG, and John Legend at the BET Awards. All three of the artists collaborated with the rapper prior to his March 31 death, with Legend and Khaled working with Hussle on the recently released single, “Higher.”
Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President and Head of Programming at BET, praised Hussle’s philanthropic efforts and said it was an honor for the network to present the award in his memory.
“As a prolific artist and leader, Nipsey Hussle was zealous about driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected leader,” Orlando said in a statement Thursday. “His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture.”
The network also praised Hussle for his “efforts to advance his community, empowering and employing underprivileged groups through real estate investments, science and tech learning centers for teens.”
Hussle was fatally shot on March 31 outside his Marathon Clothing store in South Los Angeles.
In addition to the slain rapper, BET will honor producer-director Tyler Perry with its Ultimate Icon Award.
“Perry’s unique brand of inspirational entertainment has authentically spoken to and impacted black culture and helped shape the future of black entertainment,” the network said in a press release.
Meanwhile, Mary J. Blige will receive BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the show.
“With a career of landmark achievements, including eight multi-platinum albums, nine Grammy Awards (plus a staggering 32 nominations), two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations and a SAG nomination, Mary J. Blige has remained a figure of inspiration, transformation and empowerment,” BET said in a statement.
The BET Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
