John Singleton was remembered by his friends and family members at a private funeral in his childhood neighborhood of South Los Angeles Monday.
Along with the Boyz n the Hood director’s relatives, celebrities including Taraji P. Henson, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Tyrese Gibson, and Nia Long attended the service.
Chestnut and Long both starred in Boyz n the Hood, while Gibson appeared in the Singleton-directed Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Four Brothers. Henson also co-starred in Baby Boy and Four Brothers.
Other attendees included Congresswoman Maxine Waters, rapper Ludacris, and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.
After the two hour service, Singleton’s casket was transported to Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills cemetery where he was laid to rest.
The funeral comes a little over a week after the 51-year-old Oscar nominee died on April 28. The writer-producer-director had been in a coma after suffering a stroke on April 17, and his family ultimately made the decision to take him off of life support.
A larger memorial to celebrate the critically-acclaimed director’s life is currently being planned and will be held “in a few weeks.” Additional details have yet to be released.
