John Singleton has been hospitalized in Los Angeles after suffering a stroke.

In a statement Saturday, the legendary director’s family said he is receiving “great medical care” after having a stroke three days earlier.

“On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital,” the statement read. “John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues. ”

TMZ reported that Singleton checked himself into the hospital after experiencing weakness in his leg, following a flight from Costa Rica to the U.S.

The writer-producer-director co-created FX series Snowfall, and is perhaps best known for directing Boyz n the Hood, which launched the acting careers of  Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut.

FX Networks said in a statement Saturday: “We are sad to learn the news of John’s condition, but we know he’s a fighter. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at FX and his Snowfall family are with him and we are hopeful for a complete and speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg posted a picture on Instagram of himself with Singleton, along with the caption: “Pray 4 my brother.”

Nia Long, who played Brandi in Boyz n the Hood, also sent prayers on social media.

“Praying hard this morning for my friend @johnsingleton PULL THROUGH BABY,” she tweeted.

Omar Epps tweeted: “Pull thru brother! The world needs your voice and vision. Prayers up for your family as well.”

Singleton, 51, made his directorial debut with Boyz n the Hood. The gritty drama about gangs in South Central Los Angeles earned two Oscar nominations –best director and best original screenplay — making him the youngest director ever nominated for an Academy Award.
