The South Los Angeles Intersection near where Nipsey Hussle was killed will now be known as “Nipsey Hussle Square.”

Before ending its meeting Friday afternoon, the L.A. City Council voted unanimously to rename the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue after the late rapper, activist, and entrepreneur.

Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who represents the area, proposed the motion after a petition calling for the change gathered nearly 500,000 signatures.

Hussle, real name Ermias Asghedom, grew up in the area and the intersection is located right outside his store, The Marathon. The hip-hop star’s family and some of his fans attended Friday’s packed city council meeting.

After the vote, Harris-Dawson released a statement saying the measure had passed.

“I am honored to announce that the LA City Council voted unanimously to name the intersection at Crenshaw and Slauson as ‘Nipsey Hussle Square,'” he wrote in a message posted on social media. “Thank you to his family and community for coming out to celebrate this monumental occasion. His work and impact.”

The council vote came on the same day as a private burial for the Grammy-nominated rapper at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills cemetery.

Hussle was fatally shot on March 31 outside his Marathon Clothing store in South L.A., and two other men were injured in the shooting.

Eric Holder, 29, has been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon in the case.

He pleaded not guilty on April 4.
