Glenn Jones, who scored R&B hits in the 1980s and ’90s, sat down with TV One’s Unsung to offer insight on why he faded from the music scene.

Jones started out as a gospel singer, before segueing into R&B. After landing a record deal, he climbed the charts with hits such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “I’ve Been Searching” and “Here I Go Again.”

Despite topping the charts, Jones never became a household name and eventually disappeared.

The singer told Unsung he faced several roadblocks along the way, including shady business deals, bankruptcy, a life-threatening health crisis and pressure from Jive Records to be more like his labelmate, R. Kelly.

“He’s an incredible writer and producer, but he’s about the whole sexual things,” Jones said about Kelly. “It just made me feel like ‘okay, I need to be somewhere else. I need to be somewhere that people believe in the same thing I believe in. At least they support my vision.'”

Despite facing one setback after another, Jones said he remains committed to music.

Unsung‘s never-before-told story of Glenn Jones premiered Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET/8C on TV One.
