Sens. Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders are both making a play for votes in Los Angeles this week. While Harris pitches the Hollywood elite, Sanders is rallying union workers at UCLA.
Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes co-hosted a star-studded fundraiser for Harris tonight, along with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, according to The Associated Press.
Harris was expected to attend, along with a who’s who of entertainment power brokers. The event was co-chaired by Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley, Chris Silbermann of ICM Partners, producer Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Damon Lindelof, who co-created Lost with Abrams.
The gathering took place at Abrams’ home in the exclusive Pacific Palisades neighborhood of L.A., with tickets costing $2,800 per person, AP reported. Co-chairs are shelling out $10,000.
Harris has been in Southern California over the past few days while Congress is in recess. On Tuesday night, she guested on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! The senator told host Jimmy Kimmel she’s “enjoying” the campaign and likes visiting “rural areas.”
Harris wasn’t the only 2020 presidential contender rallying L.A. voters.
Sen. Bernie Sanders joined thousands of striking University of California union workers Wednesday at UCLA, where a one-day walkout was held. Sanders was shown on the local news offering workers words of encouragement as they fight for increased pay and benefits amid contract talks.
On Saturday, March 23, Sanders is planning a large rally at Grand Park across from L.A. City Hall, according to an invitation obtained by Urban Hollywood 411.
Last month, the Vermont senator announced he was making another bid for the White House to unseat “pathological liar” Donald Trump.
The Sanders weekend rally starts at 2:30 p.m., but with L.A.’s notorious traffic, attendees are urged to arrive early. The event is free and open to the public, however, an RSVP is encouraged. You can click here to sign up.
Sanders will hold a rally in San Francisco on Sunday.
