VH1 will pay homage to U.S. House speaker Nancy Pelosi and award-winning director Ava DuVernay.
Pelosi and DuVernay will be recognized at the “VH1 Trailblazer Honors” ceremony on International Women’s Day, March 8, which will help kick off Women’s History Month.
The event — set to take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. — “will celebrate today’s most respected politicians, entertainers, artists, activists, allies and icons who have dedicated their time and steadfast commitments to the women’s movement and beyond,” VH1 said in a press release.
“Centered around this year’s incredible breakthroughs in female empowerment and human rights, the annual event will feature the landmark achievements of its honorees,” the press release continues.
Both women were chosen for the honor because they embody the spirit of a trailblazer, the cable network said. DuVernay, for instance, is the first African-American woman to direct a film that grossed $100 million at the box office, to name one notable accomplishment.
As for Pelosi, the California Democrat is the only female in history to hold the speaker of the House title. She’s also one of the oldest House speakers ever elected to the role.
Past Trailblazer honorees include music icon Cyndi Lauper, author-activist James Baldwin, and director-producer Ryan Murphy, to name a few.
The “VH1 Trailblazer Honors” will air Friday, March 8 at 9 pm ET on VH1 and Logo.
