Earl “DMX” Simmons is a free man.
The rapper-actor was released Friday from Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution in West Virginia after serving a one-year sentence for tax evasion.
DMX visited a local breakfast eatery upon leaving the prison, as TMZ reported, and he was later pictured with his fiancée, Desiree Lindstrom, and their young son, Exodus.
The 48-year-old entertainer’s release was originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27, but it’s the prison’s policy to release inmates early if their sentence ends on a weekend.
DMX was arrested in July 2017 for tax fraud, with federal prosecutors accusing him of hiding millions in income from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from 2010 to 2015.
Additionally, authorities said he tried to dodge $1.7 million in existing tax liabilities.
“While raking in millions from his songs, including his 2003 hit ‘X Gon’ Give it to Ya,’ DMX didn’t give any of it to the IRS,” former U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim stated at the time.
After pleading not guilty to the allegations, the rapper changed his plea to guilty in December 2017. “I’m responsible… I failed to file taxes,” he said during a court hearing.
This isn’t DMX’s first stint behind bars. The hip-hop star has been arrested more than a dozen times for various offenses, including cocaine possession, criminal impersonation, and reckless driving, to name a few.
It’s rumored that the dad-of-15 is planning a new album to celebrate his most recent release from prison.
