The nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, with Black Panther making history as the first superhero film to ever receive a best picture nomination.
The Marvel hit also earned nominations for best costume design, production design, original score, sound editing, sound mixing, and original song for Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s All the Stars.
The Ryan Coogler-directed Wakanda saga — which stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira — was last year’s highest grossing domestic film after taking in $700 million. Wordwide it made $1.3 billion.

Tuesday was also big day for Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and the Yorgos Lanthimos period drama, The Favourite. Each filmreceived a leading ten nominations.
Spike Lee picked up his first directing nomination in over 20 years for helming BlacKkKlansman. He was also nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for co-writing the film. Lee was last nominated in 1998 for directing the documentary 4 Little Girls.
The Big Sick actor-writer Kumail Nanjiani and Black-ish actress Tracee Ellis Ross announced the nominations live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The awards will be handed out at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center on Sunday, Feb. 24, live on ABC.
