Box Office: ‘Glass’ Cuts Through Competition for $47 Million Debut

Universal Pictures

M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass scared away the competition over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend for an estimated $40.6 million three-day debut, according to Comscore. The supernatural thriller is now on pace to earn $47 million over the long four-day weekend.

Analysts had projected the thriller would open somewhere in the $50 million to $60 million range. However, frightful reviews from critics probably didn’t help. The film currently has a 36 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as “feeble” and “broken.”

While it appears the film will fall below expectations, it’s still on pace to chart the third best MLK holiday opening ever, after American Sniper ($107 million) and Ride Along ($48 million).

With a reported $20 million production budget, Glass is also on solid financial ground.

A sequel to Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016), the film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy. Shyamalan financed the movie himself, and it is distributed by Universal Pictures.

Aquaman took third place with $10.3 million for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and $12.8 million over four days.

Fourth place went to Japanese anime martial arts film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, with $8.7 million for the
weekend, and $9.7 million for the 4-day holiday period.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse rounded out the top five with $7.2 million over three days, and an expected $9.1 million for the 4-day period.
