‘Green Book’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’ Land Key Golden Globes Nominations

The 2019 Golden Globes nominations were announced Thursday morning.

While the upcoming Dick Cheney biopic, Vice, starring Christian Bale leads the motion picture nominees with six nods, Green Book and BlacKkKlansman also made strong showings.

Green Book, a racial road trip film starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, picked up five nominations, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

Mortensen also received a nod for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Mahershala Ali was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture. Peter Farrelly received a Best Director – Motion Picture nomination, and in the category of Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie received a nomination.

Also receiving considerable attention was Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman about an African-American police detective who infiltrates a local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

The drama received four nods, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, a Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama nomination for John David Washington. Adam Driver received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, and Spike Lee received a Director – Motion Picture nomination.

Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk will also be a major contender at the Globes.

The film received three nominations including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for Regina King, and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture for Jenkins, who adapted the film from James Baldwin’s novel by the same name.

Meanwhile, Black Panther received three nominations. It picked up nods for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Original Score for composer Ludwig Göransson, and Best Original Song for All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Tiffith, Mark Spears, Solana Rowe, Al Shuckburgh.

The awards will be handed out in Beverly Hills on Sunday, Jan. 6.
