‘Creed II’ Smashes Thanksgiving Opening Day Record at Box Office

Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone — the stars of Creed II — have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

The sequel to Creed opened with an impressive $12 million at the box office on Wednesday, with $9 million in earnings on Thanksgiving day across 3,359 locations.

Creed II is projected to earn $60 million or more over its five-day launch, making it the top “Thanksgiving opening of all time for a live-action title,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The MGM-New Line release directed by Steven Caple Jr. reportedly cost $50 million to produce.

The original Creed’s Thanksgiving launch brought in $42 million three years ago, later going on to  earn $109.7 million domestically and $173.5 million worldwide. Creed — directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther)— had a budget of $35 million.

Stallone’s role in the film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but he lost to actor Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies).

Walt Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet also enjoyed an impressive Thanksgiving debut, opening with $18.5 million on Wednesday.
