Netflix has decided to shelve Marvel superhero series Luke Cage.

The surprise announcement came Friday, just days after the streaming giant pulled the plug on Iron Fist, another Marvel show.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” Marvel and Netflix said in a joint statement.

“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” the statement continued.

Season two of the series premiered in June.

According to Deadline, contract negotiations for a third season were underway when Netflix suddenly decided to cancel the series.

Sources told the website creative differences and a breakdown in contract talks led to the drama’s demise, even though showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and the series’ writers were already working on scripts for a third season.

The Luke Cage character was introduced on Jessica Jones in 2015, and the series debuted in 2016.

The drama stars Mike Colter in the title role. Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Rosario Dawson and Alfre Woodard also star.

Marvel parent company, Disney, is launching its own streaming service next year to rival Netflix.

But for now, it’s unclear if Disney will resurrect Luke Cage to go on its new platform.

Marvel dramas Jessica Jones, The Punisher and Daredevil will continue on Netflix.
