Saturday Night Live stars Colin Jost and Michael Che opened the 70th Emmy Awards Monday in Los Angeles with a barrage of biting jokes, but not all of them were met with laughter.

In a style similar to their Weekend Update segment, the SNL head writers riffed on Hollywood’s diversity problem, Roseanne Barr’s “messed up” life, the country’s current racial divisions and the #MeToo movement.

After Jost welcomed viewers, Che mentioned the seemingly endless list of producers, directors and actors accused of sexual harassment.

“It is an honor to be here sharing this night with the many, many talented and creative people who haven’t been caught yet,” Che quipped.

In a nod to the Emmys’ 70th show, Jost noted how things have changed since the first awards were handed out in 1949.

“Things were very different back then. Gas was 17 cents a gallon, a new home cost $7,000 and we all agreed that Nazis were bad,” he said to applause from the audience.

The two then ticked off a list of canceled shows that were given a lifeline by other networks, before segueing into a bit about Roseanne Barr.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was canceled by Fox but picked up by NBC,” Jost said to applause.

Last Man Standing was canceled by ABC, and then picked up by Fox,” Che added.

“…and Roseanne was canceled by herself, but picked up by white nationalists,” Jost joked.

“She’s had a rough year,” Che noted. “You know, I heard Roseanne is actually moving to Israel. I mean damn, how messed up is your life when you have to go to the Middle East, just to get peace of mind?”

Some of the one-liners were met with criticism from viewers at home.

“Colin Jost and Michael Che should never host anything again,” one person tweeted.

“Colin Jost is boring. Michael Che is ok. Can Maya Rudolph just host this herself? Now she is fabulous,” another added.

A third said, “I thought the Emmy Awards would suck because of hosts Colin Jost & Michael Che but I was wrong. It just sucked in general.”

Despite the negative reviews, other social media users liked what they saw.

“Love love loved Colin Jost and Michael Che, holy cow good job!” one person wrote on Twitter.

Someone else added, “I’m actually enjoying the #emmys so far. Michael Che really did that and Henry Winkler, my heart is warm.”

Another said, “I gotta admit, Colin Jost and Michael Che are hilarious as this year’s hosts.”

Looks like the hosts made a few people smile.
