Netflix Unveils First Look at Rebranded ‘Narcos: Mexico’

After three seasons of focusing on the vicious drug cartels in Colombia, Narcos is moving to Mexico to explore the origins of the modern drug war.

Netflix released first look photos Wednesday of its newly rebranded Narcos: Mexico, including images of the show’s new lead actors, Diego Luna and Michael Peña.

According to a synopsis from the streaming giant, Narcos: Mexico will go “back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers.”

The rebranded series will focus on the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo founds the cartel and starts building an empire.

California-based DEA agent Kiki Camarena moves to Guadalajara to take on a new post, but quickly realizes his assignment will be more challenging, and dangerous, than he ever imagined.

Luna will play Gallardo — otherwise known as El Padrino (the godfather) — a “quiet but bold, inscrutable but sharp-minded” founder of the Guadalajara Cartel.

Peña co-stars as Camarena, a family man and undercover DEA agent who gathers valuable intelligence, and becomes more entangled in his mission. But the deeper Camerena digs, tragic events unfold, affecting the drug trade for years to come.

In real life, Camerena was abducted in 1985, tortured and murdered.
