Jay-Z’s Trayvon Martin Documentary Series to Premiere This Month

Trayvon Martin Movie (Paramount Network)

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is set to debut July 30 on the Paramount Network and BET.

The six-part documentary series details the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, his parents’ heartbreak and the controversial not guilty verdict that allowed his killer, George Zimmerman, to go free.

The first official trailer for the series was released earlier this week. The gripping teaser opens with Trayvon’s father calling 911 to report his 17-year-old son missing.

The minute-long preview includes footage of Trayvon’s tearful parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the massive protests that swept the nation after the unarmed African-American teen’s shooting death in February 2012, and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“It took my son being shot down to make me stand up,” Fulton says in the trailer.

Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who used Florida’s Stand Your Ground law as justification for fatally shooting Trayvon, said he fired in self defense.

In July 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.

The trailer includes footage of the protests that followed, with many of the marchers carrying signs showing Trayvon’s face on them, while others held bags of Skittles candy. The teen was killed while returning to his dad’s house from a convenience store after buying Skittles and a beverage.

Jay-Z’s previous documentary series, TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, centered on a young black man who committed suicide after being jailed for 1,000 days at the notorious Rikers Island facility for allegedly stealing a backpack. It aired last year on Spike and won a Peabody Award.

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story premieres on the Paramount Network and BET on Monday, July 30 at 10 p.m.

  1. “The Trayvon Martin Story” or as more commonly known as ” A Day At The Shooting Gallery Where Everybody Is A Winner”.

  2. Trayvon Martin? I’d forgotten about him. He’s the thug, high school burglar who, when encountering an amateur watchman, attacked him, bashed his head to the ground, and got killed while doing so. A classic story of a young black man getting killed while trying to kill others. Hardly an unusual story.

  3. A vibrant child of color, cut down in his prime. How do we know he wasn’t America’s next brain surgeon? Tragically, we’ll never know. Sadly, he never got to consume the vibrant beverage, “Lean” he was finna brew. R.I.P. “G.”
