Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza was pardoned Thursday by President Donald Trump, and wasted no time bragging about his good fortune.

The political commentator, author and director pleaded guilty in 2014 to making illegal campaign contributions to a U.S. Senate candidate in New York. He was sentenced to eight months in a halfway house and five years of probation.

D’Souza is best known for his 2012 documentary 2016: Obama’s America, which Salon.com called a “demented anti-Obama crusade.” His other films include Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party and 2014 America: Imagine the World Without Her.

Trump announced his plans to pardon D’Souza Thursday morning on Twitter.

“Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today,” the president tweeted. “He was treated very unfairly by our government! Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!”

Shortly after Trump’s tweet, D’Souza took to Twitter to plug his next film.

“Be the very first to know about my new movie, due out this summer in time for the midterm elections!” he tweeted.

Hours later, he jumped on Twitter again to take a swipe at former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who presided over his case, and was fired last year after Trump took office.

“KARMA IS A BIT– DEPT,” D’Souza tweeted. “Preet Bharara wanted to destroy a fellow Indian American to advance his career. Then he got fired & I got pardoned.”

Bharara responded by reminding D’Souza that he “broke the law.”

“The President has the right to pardon but the facts are these: D’Souza intentionally broke the law, voluntarily pled guilty, apologized for his conduct & the judge found no unfairness,” Bharara tweeted. “The career prosecutors and agents did their job. Period.”
