The first trailer for the upcoming Whitney Houston documentary Whitney has arrived and it’s emotional.
Miramax and Roadside Attractions released the trailer on Friday, April 27. Whitney is the first movie about the late superstar approved by her estate.
The video features never-before-seen footage of Houston and interviews with her friends and family — including her mother Cissy Houston, ex-husband Bobby Brown, Kevin Costner, who co-starred with Houston in The Bodyguard, and music executive Clive Davis.
In one scene, an emotional Houston confesses, “People think it’s so damn easy. And it’s not.”
The trailer goes on to show the six-time Grammy winner in candid family photos as her hit single I Have Nothing plays in the background.
The film was helmed by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, whose credits include One Day in September and The Last King of Scotland.
Houston died in Beverly Hills on Feb. 11, 2012. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office ruled her death was an accidental drowning caused by atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine intoxication. She was 48.
The documentary about her life will premiere on May 16 at the Cannes Film Festival, and is slated to arrive in theaters on July 6, 2018.
